EMDR Therapy a world class trauma-based therapy

emdr therapy charlotte nc

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is an empirically validated psychotherapeutic intervention used to treat the adverse effects of traumatic experiences. By utilizing bilateral stimulation, EMDR activates the brain's natural adaptive information processing system allowing the brain to reprocess and desensitize to traumatic memories. Traumatic memories are stored differently than “normal”memories in the brain. Sometimes our brains do not fully process traumatic memories due to our inability to understand the trauma. Because of this the traumatic memory gets “stuck” in a certain part of the brain that can result in uncomfortable reactions when the memories are triggered, such as extreme emotion, anger or aggressive behavior.

What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

Like some other psychotherapies, EMDR was the brainchild of serendipity. One day in 1987 Francine Shapiro, a California psychologist in private practice, went for a walk in the woods. Yet she discovered that her anxiety lifted after moving her eyes back and forth while observing her surroundings.

Therapists will work with their clients to find the pace and bilateral stimulation that works best. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from emotional trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain.

EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories is such a way that normal information processing is resumed. Therapists often use EMDR to help clients uncover and process beliefs that developed as the result of relational traumas, childhood abuse and/or neglect. EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a type of trauma treatment that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process through traumatic events. With EMDR, these memories which have been stored as trauma experiences will be reprocessed so that the memory will remain, but the person will be able to recall the event at will without reliving it. It is often helpful to have one or two sessions with the individual to fully understand the nature of their problem to determine if EMDR therapy will be an appropriate treatment. During these sessions, the therapist will answer any questions the prospective patient may have about EMDR.

Bilateral Stimulation repeatedly activates both hemispheres of the brain. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, as this portion of sleep is frequently considered to be the time when the mind processes the recent events in the person’s life. EMDR therapy uses a technique called bilateral stimulation to repeatedly activate opposite sides of the brain. This bilateral stimulation is most often performed via eye movements but can also be administered by touch and/or sound. These eye movements mimic the period of sleep referred to as rapid eye movement or REM sleep; this stage of sleep is when the mind is attempting to processes recent events. EMDR seems to help the brain reprocess the trapped memories in such a way that normal information processing is resumed.
